Jennifer Lopez posts message of support for sister’s non-binary child
Vegas resident entertainer Jennifer Lopez is receiving praise for her public message of support for her sister’s non-binary child.
“Brendan is strong and smart and loving and a [sic] obviously a leader!!” wrote Lopez on Instagram. “Titi Jenn loves you!! #superproudauntie #familia”.
Brendan is the second child of Lopez’s sister, Leslie, and represented their school at the Global Young Leaders Conference in Washington D.C.
Rightly so, Brendan’s aunt wanted to make sure the world knew about their big accomplishment.
“They were the one person selected to represent their school at #globalyoungleadersconference in Washington DC!!! And I couldn’t be more proud!!!”
Notice Lopez’s use of the gender-neutral pronouns “they” and “their”. This brief message from a proud aunt has made Lopez one of the biggest celebrities to publicly use gender-neutral pronouns and one of a few to just as publicly acknowledge a non-binary family member.
As for Lopez’s choice to refer to Brendan as “my sister Leslie’s second child”, while not confirmed by the star, this is likely due to the fact that there is not an established term like “niece” or “nephew” for a sibling’s non-binary child.
To be sure, Lopez’s post is a small step, but it’s one in the right direction and therefore worth noting.
